Secrets of a Highly Successful New Manager Costly Mistakes to Avoid (Audible Audio Edition) Ethan Powers Gail L Chaffee Books

I have read 2 books in this series and I must say that I like this a lot better. The writer discusses 5 key pillars that are he feels are critical to be a successful new manager. These are Communication Skills, Team Building Skills, Inner Character, Interpersonal Skills and Business Acumen. He uses a lot of analogies to drive home his messages which makes his book very interesting.

In communication skills, Ethan discusses the importance of communicating clearly. He emphasises this with very good analogies that anyone will be able to appreciate very quickly. It would have been better if he gave some tips on how to communicate well. In team building skills, Ethan discusses the importance of team communication and provides some tips to conflict resolution. Inner character talks about self awareness and understanding, constantly improving oneself and thereafter seeking feedback. The 4th pillar is about interpersonal skills. Here Ethan, covers many topics including giving proper recognition, setting high standards, leading by example, the classic praising in public but chiding in private as well as protecting your employees. The last pillar that he discusses was business acumen. Personally, I don't think business acumen is something that can be taught and that's why there are so many mediocre managers around. I certainly agree with the importance of business acumen. However, I believe a lot of it is inner strength, experience and what already exists within you.

The infographics in the book could be bigger. It was too difficult for me to look at it properly. Overall, I think this is a good book that new managers would benefit from. It talks about different topics that most people would have no conscious awareness of, especially new managers. THis is an easy read, great for managers new on the job who have too many things to learn and read already. Leadership skills need to be developed over time so do not expect magic.

It's a really well written book. Easy to read.
Great book on how to be a great manager! The author explains the importance of communication and team building skills, on being confident and effective in organising his team, and much more.
Many good tips, and recommended for new managers. New managers are promoted out of competence as an individual contributor. But what makes you successful as an individual contributor does not automatically make you successful as a manager, and I see many new managers keep doing what they do well as an individual, without realising that they need very new skills now. This book gives you many great tips that will give any new managers a head start in your managerial path. Definitely worth reading.
As I have been in the shoes myself, I'm quite agreed with the sentiment that "before you are a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others."

This book is divided into 2 sections.

In the first part of the first section, you will be shown what are the top 3 expectations from both the management and the subordinates and how you can meet this expectations easily by following the traits of the 5 pillars (Today , I Can Be Invincible).

The rest of the chapters will explain to you the important of these 5 pillars with a lot of practical tips and examples on how to apply them. Some are humorous, some hindsight left you ponder and some are from author's own experiences. and the last chapter ends with 13 awesome quotes to inspire and reinforce what you have learnt.

In the second and last section, it is packed with 46 essential skills on how to become an effective manager in terms of planning, organizing, directing or controlling that are not difficult to apply.
