The Underside is a book set in modern day society, with a fairy realm living right along side our own. Rosalyn's normal life is changed forever when she is transformed into a troll and she is introduced to the Underside of her small college town.If you think "girl books" are just about beautiful princesses, romance, and gossipy schoolgirls, think again. The Underside is a great book featuring a tough female lead in a unique situation that apologizes to no one. All of my favorite female characters are adventurous, tough, curious, and determined. Rosalyn is all of these things, and has her own sense of independence. But she is not necessarily a superhero. She is a normal person (or in this case, a troll). And like all people, she has faults, limitations and doubts just like the rest of us. I always love a good female character and this book does it well.
Another aspect of the story I really love is the duality of the treatment of trolls vs racism in our society. Trolls are mean, tough, and ugly - and no one's favorite when it comes to fantasy novels. The poor treatment of them by the other creatures and fae is striking. The book does not take this too seriously (I find myself hoping it will in future editions), but I really enjoyed the settle undertones of this plot line.
All and all, I really enjoyed it. The Underside is an easy, compelling read that will appeal to male readers as well as females, young and adult. Give it a try!

This is my favorite kind of book, full of trolls and fairies fighting evil together. Looking forward to the sequel!
A good read. Fun, adventurous, quaint.
Eld builds an interesting and dynamic mondern fantasy world, launching from the distinct viewpoint of a human turned troll--much against her wishes. The novel builds steadily as Ros learns more about the world she's been thrust into and tries to find a way to break her curse. As the first book in a trilogy, it resolves its central plot while leaving certain questions up in the air.
